Yin,
Yang and Diet
Shiatsu
practitioners often will recommend a change in the diet plan for their customers. In
traditional oriental medicine practice, diet is an integral part of the treatment. Various
types of foods differ in their physical, mental, spiritual and emotional effects. This
energy is split into two parts known as Yin and Yang. Yin is where energy is expanding and
yang is where it is contracting. Food can be divided into three main types-those that are
'balanced', and some that are yin and some that are yang.
Yin Foods:
Milk
Alcohol
Honey
Sugar
Oil
Fruit juices
Spices
Stimulants
Most drugs (such as aspirin)
Tropical vegetables and fruits
Refined foods
Most food additives of a chemical nature.
Yang foods:
Poultry
Seafood
Eggs
Meat
Salt
Fish
Cheese
Balanced foods:
Seeds
Nuts
Vegetables
Cereal grains
Beans
Sea vegetables
Temperate fruits (such as apples and pears)
The balance between yin and yang is very important to the body. For example, it plays a
major role in the production of hormones such as progesterone, glycogen and insulin and
the expansion and contraction of the lungs, etc. A balanced way of eating, mainly from the
grains, beans, seeds, nuts and vegetables, etc, is important as this will help to achieve
the energy balance in the meridians, organs and
chakras. When these two opposing forces of yin and yang are
in harmony and balanced, physical and mental health will result. For an perspective of food from the traditional oriental perspective,
