The Probiotics Potential for Weight Control
By Dr. Mark A. Brudnak

(FeatureSource) Weight control is a significant worldwide problem, particularly in the United States. In a recent U.S. poll, 65 percent of the respondents described themselves as being from 5 to more than 30 pounds overweight. A study by the National Health and Nutrition Examination found the percentage of overweight American adults is now at 64.5 percent. And sadly, this trend holds true for children, too, who are becoming obese at an alarming rate.

Being overweight increases the risks for other health problems, such as heart disease and stroke, certain types of cancer, gout (joint pain caused by excess uric acid) and gall bladder disease. Being overweight can also cause problems such as sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep) and osteoarthritis (wearing away of the joints). And the more overweight you are, the more likely you are to have health problems.

For someone who is overweight, losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of his or her body weight may lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Even a small weight loss can improve health. However, many overweight people have difficulty reaching their healthy body weight. Making long-term changes in eating and physical activity habits is the best way to lose weight and keep it off over time.

In addition to lifestyle changes, two basic strategies can be used to help control weight with probiotics:

 1) reduce glucose absorption from the intestines;
 2) increase the metabolic use of glucose.

Probiotics: Have Your Cake and the Probiotics Will Eat It Too?

Reducing glucose absorption in the gastrointestinal tract can be assisted by a variety of good products that block sugar absorption. One such product is Sweetease, which is produced by AdvoCare. Another very similar product is MAKSwee-T (pronounced “mak-swee-TEA”), which contains the proprietarily processed and naturally occurring L. arabinose. It also inhibits the body from making fat using ordinary table sugar found in most diets. Not only that, but it tastes really sweet!

The goal with this strategy is to use a high dose of probiotics to prevent food from being digested by the body and turned into fat. Put differently, the food that would ordinarily be absorbed will be consumed by the probiotics. So you can have your cake and the probiotics will eat it too! One particularly interesting product that’s been developed with this principle in mind is called PerfectContours by HLN. It contains very high levels of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and the MAKSwee-T enzyme inhibitor (to block sugar absorption and utilization for the production of fat). This sort of formula represents the next generation in products for people who want to maintain a normal weight. Moreover, it is ephedra free and body friendly.

A New Metabolic Use for Glucose
Glucose is a very good energy source and readily lends itself to the production of other substances in the body. If your body has much more energy (in the form of glucose) than it can use, what will it do? It will store the glucose as extra pounds, which you may end up carrying around for the rest of your life. The formula is simple: Too much energy (that is, glucose) equals weight gain. If you take in more calories than you use, you will gain weight.

If you decrease the amount of glucose that passes into your body, then you will effectively decrease the amount available for weight gain. This is a very important point. Glucose and other energy sources do not contribute to your gaining weight until they actually get into your body. That is to say, the energy source must pass through your stomach and intestines before it can be used. It’s not the act of ingesting the energy source that adds the pounds. That means that the calories you are counting are only potential calories until they are actually used to do something.

Think of the insides of your intestines as being external to your body. Consider the intestines to be a hollow “tube” that runs from the mouth to the anus and around which the body is wrapped. The “tube” is a useful metaphor because nothing that passes through the intestines comes into direct contact with the interior of the body. In other words, whatever you ingest enters the tube at one end and exits it at the other-but it stays in the tube the whole time. This is true not only of food but also of probiotics. They work very well in the self-contained environment of the intestines.

This is particularly significant in the area of weight control. If you supplement your diet with even larger numbers of probiotics, you can completely overshadow your body’s own ability to utilize these compounds. Very little of the food you ingest will actually be absorbed.

Finding ways to control the appetite is one of many valuable applications of probiotics. This is especially significant when you consider that nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight. Obesity affects us all, whether we actually are overweight or are simply paying to treat it in others through rising medical and insurance costs. The long-term significance of chronic obesity cannot be underestimated in terms of its effects on society.
