Causes of Fibromyalgia (Contd.) Fibromyalgia and Stress Almost all fibromyalgia patients have a history of chronic overdoing. Muscle pain and fatigue may reflect emotional and physical stress. Some support from this theory comes from the observation that fibromyalgia is found to affect mostly young women who lead busy, driven, tense and particularly stressful lives. It is found in men who are very prone to physical stress and occupational strain. Stress, anxiety, and fatigue can make fibromyalgia worse. The pain and fatigue of fibromyalgia often cause stress and anxiety, which in turn can increase the pain and fatigue, thus creating a vicious cycle. Not knowing one's boundaries and limits is the hallmark of a person suffering with fibromyalgia. They often lack the ability to balance activity and rest.
