Causes of FibromyalgiaBy Nancy Sparks Morrison Fibromyalgia may have hundreds of causes, but in my research, I have found 4 very different illness that have the SET of SYMPTOMS that is known as 'fibromyalgia.' Because some of them can be fatal, it is VERY necessary that they be eliminated before any such diagnosis of 'fibro,' is given. I am amazed that doctors are continuing to diagnose symptoms without bothering to find the cause. Here is a short synopsis of what I have found on 4 different illnesses who ALL have fibromyalgia as a symptom: Chiari Syndrome: Chiari is not usually life-threatening, but it can be. This is a malformation at the base of the skull where the spinal cord comes through. It can be inherited, you can be born with it, or it can be caused by an accident, particularly a rear end one. It CAUSES the symptoms of fibromyalgia among other things. It can sometimes be cured via surgery. Read more here: Chiari Hemochromatosis: Hemochromatosis CAUSES the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This is a KILLING disease if left untreated. There is simply too much iron in the blood and it can be controlled simply by donating blood at say the Red Cross on a regular basis. If blood is not drawn, the iron is deposited in various organs of the body and damages them beyond repair. I have a friend who has 5 to 6 months left to live because of Hemo. She is 38. Blood tests will determine this. See more here: Hemochromatosis - Diagnosis,Treatment, Maintenance Wilson's Syndrome: This is a NON-life threatening illness that can make you feel terrible. It CAUSES the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It is connected to the thyroid and low body temperature. It can almost always be cured. Special tests and special thyroid medication are needed, not just the everyday tests/medication for thyroid. See this site for more information: Wilson's Syndrome Foundation Mediterranean Fever: And then there is Familial Mediterranean Fever. It is the inherited illness that I have and which also CAUSES the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This illness is thought to rare in the United States, but it or variants of it seem to be turning up all the time. It is not curable but it is easily controllable with the medication colchicine. For more information on this illness, please see my medical website noted below and read about the illness and my personal experiences with it.
