Herbs for DepressionGinkgo (Ginkgo biloba)Ginkgo is found to be useful in relieving depression, especially in the elderly who suffer reduced blood flow to the brain, according to results form clinical trials. Ginkgo biloba improves cerebral circulation, improving memory and often benefiting depression. Ginkgo is not as effective as St. John's wort for depression, but it can be taken along with other herbs and nutrients to bolster one's overall mood. In one study, European scientists recruited a group of 40 depressed elderly people with cerebral blood flow problems who did not respond to pharmaceutical antidepressants. The researchers gave them 80 milligrams of ginkgo extract three times a day. Their depression and mental faculties both improved significantly. Dose: Take an extract that is standardized to contain 24 percent ginkgo flavone glycosides. The usual dose is 80-120 mg two times daily (breakfast and lunch). Caution: In large amounts, ginkgo may cause diarrhea, irritability and restlessness. Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)Siberian ginseng improves the balance of important neurotransmitters (including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine) in the brain. In studies using laboratory animals, Siberian ginseng has been shown to act as an MAO inhibitor. In people with depression, the herb helps improve their sense of well-being. Dosage: 400 mg of a standardized extract three times daily Other herbs with MAO inhibitor activity include caraway, celery, coriander, dill, fennel and nutmeg.
