Treatment of Vata Depression

Follow Vata-pacifying diet. Eat foods that are strengthening, heavier, and warm. Avoid salads, fruits and caffeine; favor whole grains, vegetables cooked in oil and spiced, dairy products, nuts. Add more warm and "heavier" foods to the diet (such as soups, pasta, rice with well-cooked vegetables).

Maintain a regular daily routine with early bedtime.

Daily abhyanga (oil massage) either to the whole body, time permitting, or at least to the head and the soles of the feet.

Keep warm; take warm baths or showers.

Mild exercise such as walking or yoga postures.

Daily meditation. This would help to settle the person without threatening the dynamism characteristic of vata dosha.

Listen to relaxing music.

Use Vata-balancing herbs such as anise, cinnamon, cumin, ginger, gotu kola, licorice, nutmeg, sesame seeds, and valerian (for sleep).

Herbal Remedy Useful for All Three Dosha Imbalance

Universal Herbal Formula For Depression

Regardless of the type of depression you are experiencing, use all three of the following remedies:

1. Combine

5 parts shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)

3 parts jatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi)

3 parts brahmi (gotu kola)

5 parts guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)

Take 1/4 teaspoon of this mixture with 1/2 cup warm water three times a day.

2. Take 1 teaspoon triphala with 1/2 cup warm water at bedtime every night.

3. Inhale 3 drops of Brahmi oil into each nostril twice a day, and rub the oil on the sides of your feet at bedtime.

Herbal Remedy for Vata Dosha Imbalance

1. Take

1/2 teaspoon brahmi (gotu kola)
1/2 teaspoon vacha (calamus) 
1/2 teaspoon jatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi)
1 teaspoon shankhapushpi (Crotalaria verrucosa)

Take 1/4 teaspoon of this mixture with 1/2 cup warm water three times a day.

2. Drink dashamoola tea. Steep 1 teaspoon of the herb dashamoola in 1 cup of hot water, and drink. Take twice a day.

3. Make a tea from equal proportions of ashivagandha and brahmi (about 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon each), steep in a cup of water for about 10 minutes, and drink 2 or 3 times a day.

4. Another domestic remedy for depression is a tea made of Indian basil (tulsi) and sage. Use 1/4 teaspoon tulsi and 1/2 teaspoon of sage per cup of hot water; drink twice a day.

5. Nose drops of warm sesame oil (3 to 5 drops in each nostril) are effective for relieving depression. Do this nasya procedure morning and evening on an empty stomach.

6. Rubbing the top of the head and the soles of the feet with sesame oil is quite soothing to vata and healing for vata depression.

Five Senses Remedies

Taste. Use bitter, pungent, and astringent foods, herbs, and spices. Spring churna is recommended.

Smell. Warm aromas such as cloves, calamus, and camphor are effective aromatherapy.

Sight. Use the color red.

Hearing. Listen to the sunset raga between seven and ten P.M.

Touch: Give yourself a silk glove massage daily.
