Canker sores are painful, small ulcers in the mouth or on the inner lips caused by an assortment of viruses. Doctors call this condition aphthous stomatitis. Canker sores usually clear up by themselves within a week or so, but they often recur, sometimes in the form of multiple sores. They make their presence known in a most unwelcome way when you bite into the wrong food, such as acidic foods like an orange or a tomato. It will be a very painful introduction. Between 20 and 50 percent of Americans suffer from the pain of canker sores. A susceptibility to canker sores tends to run in families. No successful conventional treatment is available.
