Fluoxetine (Prozac)

Drug class: Antidepressant (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor)


bulletTreats mental depression, particularly in people who do not tolerate tricyclic antidepressants.

What drug does

Affects serotonin, one of the chemicals in the brain called neurotransmifters, that plays a role in emotions and psychological disturbances.
CNS activity - serotonin agonist.

Time lapse before drug works: 1 to 3 weeks. 


Common initial dose - 20 mg daily 
Usual maximal dose - 80 mg

Don't take with

bulletAny monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, or within 14 days of stopping one. To do so may result in a serious or fatal reaction.
bulletAny other medicine without consulting your doctor or pharmacist. 


Symptoms: Seizures, agitation, violent vomiting.

What To Do In Case of Overdose: Dial 911 (emergency) or 0 (operator) for an ambulance or medical help. Then give first aid immediately. 


Possible Adverse Reactions Or Side Effects 
Symptoms  What To Do 
Rash, itchy skin, breathing difficulty (allergic reaction), chest pain. 
Seek emergency treatment immediately. 
Diarrhea, nervousness, drowsiness, headache, increased sweating, insomnia, anxiety. 
Continue taking medication. Call doctor when convenient. 
Chills, fever, joint or muscle pain, enlarged lymph glands, unusual excitability, blurred vision, chest pain. 
Discontinue medication. Call doctor right away.
Nightmares, taste changes, vision changes, decreased sex drive, dry mouth, skin flushing, urinating frequently, painful menstruation, stuffy nose, tremors.  Continue medication. Call doctor when convenient.
Seizures. (convulsions). 
Discontinue medication. Seek emergency treatment.
Fast heartbeat; abdominal pain; signs of low blood sugar (anxiety, nervousness, chills, increased sweating, difficulty concentrating). Discontinue medication. Call doctor right away.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, cough, increased appetite.  Continue medication. Call doctor when convenient. 

Adverse reactions and side effects may be more frequent and severe in those over age 60 than in younger persons. You may need smaller doses for shorter periods of time. 

Warnings & Precautions

Don't take if you are allergic to fluoxetine.

Before you start, consult your doctor:

bulletIf you have a history of seizure disorders.
bulletIf you have severe liver or kidney disease. 


bulletAdvise any doctor or dentist whom you consult about the use of this medicine.
bulletFor dry mouth, suck on sugarless hard candy or chew sugarless gum. If dry mouth persists, see your dentist.
bulletDon't discontinue without consulting doctor. 


Possible Interaction With Other Drugs

Anticonvulsants Increased risk of anticonvulsant toxicity. 
Antidepressants, tricyclic Increased levels of tricyclic antidepressant; possible toxicity. 
Bupropion  Increased risk of seizures. 
Central nervous system (CNS) depressants Increased depressant effects of both drugs. 
Clozapine Increased risk of adverse clozapine reactions. 
Doxfonfluramine May cause serotonin syndrome. Avoid. 
Lithium  Risk of increased lithium effect. 
Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors May cause confusion, agitation, convulsions, high blood pressure. Possibly life-threatening. Allow 4-5 weeks between use of these drugs.
Selegiline Increased risk of adverse effects. May lead to convulsions and hypertensive crisis. Let 14 days elapse between taking the 2 drugs. 
Possible Interaction With Other Substances 
Interacts With Combined Effect
Alcohol Possible toxicity of both drugs. Avoid.
Beverages with caffeine Decreases effect of fluoxetine. 
Cocaine Decreases effect of fluoxetine. 
Marijuana Decreases effect of fluoxetine. 
Tobacco Decreases effect of fluoxetine.
