32. Is there any remedy that can help smokers?

The best way for smokers to help themselves (and others) is to stop smoking!

Dr. Andrew Weil recommends the following exercise to help quit smoking:

  1. Sit with your back straight. Place tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there throughout the exercise.
  2. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
  3. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
  4. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  5. Exhale completely through your mouth, again making a whoosh sound, to a count of eight.
  6. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times.

If you smoke, antioxidant vitamins will help reduce the stress of the poisons of nicotine and tar on the body. Take lots of vitamins C and E and beta carotene. This helps to reverse the changes in the respiratory tissue caused by smoking, and so help protect against lung cancer. Research has shown that the amino acid cysteine helps prevent damage by alcohol and certain chemicals. The chemicals studied involved in cigarette smoking were acetaldehyde and cadmium, a heavy metal. In light of such evidence, smokers and the non-smokers that surround them might find it beneficial to take cysteine. Cysteine itself is prone to oxidation and is not efficient in the body, and neither is its alternate form L-cysteine, which is most often found commercially. So look for the protected form of cysteine, known as N-acetyl cysteine. This amino acid is protected from oxidation, helping it to be assimilated by cells.
