Narcolepsy

Symptoms Of Narcolepsy

5. Sleep Paralysis

Sleep paralysis is another classic symptom of narcolepsy. Just as you are falling asleep, or as you are beginning to awaken, you try to move or say something but find that you cannot, even though you are fully conscious. This lasts for only a second or two, but it can be frightening, especially the first time it happens or when they experience the sensation of being unable to breathe. Although accessory respiratory muscles may not be active during these episodes, diaphragmatic activity continues. These episodes usually end either on their own or when someone touches or speaks to you.

Some report experiencing paralysis at dangerous moments and as a result, burning them- selves, nearly drowning in the bathtub, or having accidents or close calls while driving, to name just a few mishaps.

6. Automatic behavior

Automatic behavior is best described as "absent-minded" behavior or speech that is often non- sensical and that the patient does not remember. Familiar, routine or boring tasks are performed without the full awareness or later memory of them. Automatic behavior occurs more often when the patient is sleepy.

7. Nocturnal sleep disruption

Most people with narcolepsy experience nocturnal awakenings (waking up from sleep at night). They find it difficult to go back to sleep from these awakenings.
