Information
Modafinil (Provigil, Cephalon)
Uses
Treatment to help people who have narcolepsy to stay awake during the day. It does not cure narcolepsy.
Dosage:
For Narcolepsy:
Common initial dose - 100 to 200 mg daily
Usual maximal dose (carefully monitored higher doses may sometimes be required) - 400 mg once daily or 200 mg am and noon
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose: Symptoms include agitation, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and insomnia.
Overdose is unlikely to threaten life. If overdose is suspected, call doctor, poison control center or hospital emergency room for instructions.
What drug does:
Stimulates the central nervous system. GABA antagonism as well as low-affinity dopamine transport has been shown.
Side effects:
Usually none to minimal.

Common Side Effects:
Anxiety, headache, nausea, nervousness, trouble sleeping. |
Continue taking medication. Call doctor when convenient. |
Infrequent:
Vision changes, chills or fever, confusion, dizziness, fainting, increased thirst or urination, depression, memory or mood changes, shortness of breath, trouble in urinating, uncontrolled face, mouth and tongue movements. |
Continue taking medication. Call doctor right away. |
| Appetite changes, diarrhea, mouth dryness, skin dryness, skin flushing, muscle stiffness, stuffy or runny nose, skin tingling, trembling or shaking, vomiting. |
Continue taking medication. Call doctor when convenient. |
Adverse reactions and side effects may be more frequent and severe in people
over 60 than in younger persons.
Warnings & Precautions
Don't take modafinil if:
You are allergic to modafinil or any other central nervous system stimulants.
Before you start, consult your doctor:
 | If you have heart disease or have had a heart attack. |
 | If you have had high blood pressure. |
 | If you have had liver or kidney disease. |
 | If you have a history of severe mental illness.

Prolonged use:
Prolonged use may lead to physical or mental dependence. Consult your doctor if any of the following signs of dependence occur:
 | A strong desire to continue taking this medication. |
 | A need to increase the dose to receive the effects of the medicine. |
 | Withdrawal side effects when you stop taking the medicine. |
Miscellaneous Comments
If you are using a birth control method, such as pills or implants, they may not be as effective while taking modafinil and for up to one month after stopping
modafinil.
Modafilnil may affect the results in some medical tests.
