14. What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are also fats, or lipids like cholesterol, but they have a chemical structure that is different from cholesterol's. A triglyceride molecule contains three chains of fat-hence, the "tri" prefix. And instead of being attached to a protein molecule, it is attached to a glycerol (alcohol) molecule, which, like protein, is soluble in the watery serum part of the blood.

Triglycerides provide fats that are either burned for energy or deposited into the body's fat stores - the fat found under your skin and around your middle - to be used later for energy.
